Dragon 1998 Message

Phoenix sinks into decay,
Haughty Dragon yearns to slay.
Lyorn growls and lowers horn,
Tiassa dreams and plots are born.
Hawk looks down from lofty flight,
Dzur stalks and blends with night.
Issola strikes from courtly bow,
Tsalmoth maintains though none know how.
Vallista rends and then rebuilds,
Jhereg feeds on others' kills.
Quiet Iorich won't forget,
Sly Chreotha weaves his net.
Yendi coils and strikes, unseen,
Orca circles, hard and lean.
Frightened Teckla hides in grass,
Jhegaala shifts as moments pass.
Athyra rules minds' interplay,
Phoenix rise from ashes, gray.

by Stephen K.Z. Brust

Well, with Starfire fast approaching and Dragon fading in the distance, I thought we should take one last nostalgic moment. So I present to you my comprehensive list of sword sharpening jokes. ^_^ (Yeah, I altered a few from the ones listed in "Yendi" or mentioned in the game. So sue me.)

-----

How many ______ does it take to sharpen a sword?

Phoenix? One, to say "Servant, sharpen this sword!"

Dragons? Three: One to sharpen it, one to get it dull again within fifteen seconds, and one to be the object it gets dulled on.

Lyorns? Seven: One to sharpen it, one to make a note of it in the various records, two to discuss the impact of this sharpening on the empire, and three to research and write the tome "A Brief History of Sword Sharpening".

Tiassa? None: They just wait for the sword to sharpen itself.

Hawks? Two: One to examine the sword and one to explain to you that the sword isn't REALLY dull but has merely achieved a new state that is, from a certain point of view (for instance, your enemy's), better than the old.

Dzur? Four: One to sharpen the stone and three to put up enough of a fight to make it worthwhile.

Issola? Five: One to beat the sword into a plowshare, one to convince the swordowner that swords never solve anything anyway, two to make sure all rules of debate are observed during the argument, and one to provide food and drink.

Tsalmoth? That's anyone's guess.

Vallista? Ten: One to throw it out, four to design a new sword that never needs sharpening, three to forge it precisely, and two to put a cool new hilt on it just for the heck of it.

Jhereg? Eleven: One to arrange the sharpening, six to kill all competing sharpeners, one to sharpen it, one to kill the owner, two to "clean" and sell the sword to the highest bidder, and one to bribe everyone for good measure.

Iorich? Eighteen: One to sharpen it and seventeen to hunt down the scum who dulled it in the first place.

Chreotha? Two: One to sharpen it and one to run off with it and prove impossible to find for the remainder of the game!

Yendi? Three: One to sharpen it and one to confuse the issue.

Orca? Six: One to haggle the price, one to treat the owner out to a business lunch, two to replace all the jewels in the sword with fake ones, one to hire some slob to actually sharpen it, and one to make a note of it all in the financial records.

Teckla? Eight: One to hold the sword and seven to move the grindstone.

Jhegaala? Thirteen: One to sharpen it and twelve to put on a charming little play and interpretive dance number entitled "Pain in Slipping While Sharping A Sword".

Athyra? Nine: Four to research a sword-sharpening spell, three to come up with a new spell when none can be found, one to cast the spell, and one to explain to the owner why his sword is now pink. Easterners? Actually just the skull works quite well.

Are people who do not foresee being able to come to any game in the near future allowed to join in on this message board fun? And while I am asking, could somebody *please* explain what happened at this game? It is all rather confusing...

My appeal? Equal parts looks, charm, and style. Oh, you mean my *legal* appeal. I was tried by the Empress herself. There ain't no higher authority! Methinks you speak treason to even suggest the possibility. In any case I have relinquished my citizenship and residence in the empire, and found happiness elsewhere. I think it unlikely that we will meet again, unless my new patron requests otherwise...

The Dzur Council does not acknowledge the acceptance of debts of annoying, dishonorable retches (read: Jhereg) they happen to rid the planet of. If you really want the money so badly, go raid his house or something. Bug me again and you shall join your quarry. :b *covers name tag to go out of character* On a more positive note, looks like I'll be at Starfire after all (though not at the pre-game BBQ *sniff*) See you all there!

It appears Lord Melkor has 'dispatched' my quarry. As such, Lord Melkor has inherited the debt owed to the Jhereg (well, me). I don't know if I should extend a line of credit at our entertainment enterprises, or visit upon you F'Lopi's sentence....

(looking around) ... Geez!! They let this place go all dusty and messy and NOW! they want everything fired up. Prep the fireplaces, Aki ... scrub the windows, Aki -- those are seventeen feet wide by eighty-five feet high of stained glass! One slip with the ladder, and poor Aki's out the window and staring at all that preety landscape coming up to meet him ... I just know I NEVER should have gotten rid of the whirlwind spell during my clearance sale -- would have made dusting in here an AWFUL lot easier ... Oh - waitaminute - we're doing high-tech now. Ok. now it's vaccum cleaners and droids. Waitaminute. Does that mean I'm a droid now? WWWAITAMINUTE!!! (the spell takes hold) >

Starfire , a *new* game of interstellar intrigue and mayhem, will run 19-21 November 1999 at the Westin Hotel in Santa Clara. Hey, folks. Long time no see. Just wanted to let you all know I look forward to playing with you in the next game, whenever that is. Anyone who'd like to, be sure to write. Having a wonderful time keeping Vlad out of trouble and trying to figure out why that Lanier e'Bral keeps sending all our troops to the Southern lands for "skirmishes" when we need them in Adrilan... ka. Oh my. Oh dear. Aliera, do you recall how to get in touch with the SiG? ;) (My gods, I am nuts. To remember all that a year later... sheesh. I need a new game.)

*grabs F'Lopi* I trusted you at Castle Black. You broke that trust by concealing your identity. You don't break the trust of a Dzur. Plus, I'm looking to spite Foderil by not allowing him to kill you. Be glad this isn't a Morganti. *whacks F'lopi's head off* ;) *wonders who Foderil morgantied two months ago if F'lopi was still breathing two minutes ago* *gets a headache from thinking too hard*

OKay All I want to know is how much money did you pay me Lord Morolan? You promised that if a certain friend of yours got better that I would be greatly rewarded... well where is the money? Not that I am concerned about it or any thing I mean I trust you, just keep your hand away from that darn blade last time... well I would rather not talk about last time I saw that sword really that was laess then fun. In fact it was down right painful.(my head still hurts) I'm sure that I woun't need to contact the collection agence that I was just in touch with about...uhm.. lets say another matter...but just a friendly reminder that jhereg don't like to be stiffed on payment due. While it is quite true that you without a dought would beat me personally in a duel, it seems like it would be highly dishonorable to even have to challange one so great as yourself and as we all know the last thing I would want to do is dishonour you, I mean Liener has already been chosen... I mean that would not serve me in a profitable manner so I do hope that the gold is in the mail.. with great wishes and thanks for a splended weekend, lord Garthan okay now that that is out of the way thanks to all for a great weekend it was the best time I have ever had and I look forward to the pun... I mean fun...of the next game hope to see lots of you there and can't wait until I hear when and where it is.

No, I really think Warlock should be cast at something he's good at (being a sneak--for either side, doesn't matter). In such an idea world, I would be a lone fanatic, concerned only with eliminating heretics and enforcing the will of the Deity on all you godless heathens MUHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!

Things could be worse for you Cralthar, you might be cast as a lounge-lizard... At least as a lounge singer, there are some benefits (aledgedly .?.) similar to a bartender.. they're both supposed to be good listeners, experienced in life and willing to impart good advice... not that I would know...

Second, this is to Steve and Amy, last night I dreamt I was there when Starfire was being cast and I was cast as a member of the ship's crew --- a lounge singer. You mean I could have sold that piece of parchment for ten grand?!? To think I let you walk away with it! What did Fentor want with it anyway? Keep in mind, your earlship, that giving Catodon the information probably helped the Seven in their rituals. You'll get no loan to pay those taxes from me. (Of course, that's partially because I'm broke.)
Chris Reaves (Melkor) <Xanadu14@aol.com>
- Monday, August 03, 1998 at 19:26:22 (MDT
Earl Grey's recipe for curing 14k in gambling debts was simple: first, take the diary of your Dzur ancestor, copy all the information out of it, and sell it to Lord Fentor (acting, presumably, in Morrolan's stead) for 10k. Then, find Lord Catodon (the Minister of Commerce must have money, right?) and sell him the information for 4k (despite the fact that you've been freely offering it to anyone else that will listen). Of course, I eventually discovered I had to pay taxes on my sale, but asking a fellow Dzurlord for money because you've forgotten to pay taxes (and face the wrath of the entire Empire as a consequence) is much easier than asking for money to pay your gambling debts (where you only face some Jhereg scum).

Morollon says that Cralthar was "doing something against nearly everyone else in the Castle". I must demur. As far as I know, he was doing a fine job of killing Easterners with his troops, much to my delight...

Hey, Dragon was a blast and a half! I started out with everyone wanting me dead but unable to agree on how *thoroughly* dead, but I got better! Thanks due to Lord Folderol for not deigning to slay me after I kind of tried to destroy his soul (mistakes were made), to Morollan, Norathar, and Fentor for helping keep me alive, to the Empress for permitting me to grovel at her feet, to the Demon for his brilliant legal defense at my trial, to K'Paar for not testifying against me by conveniently being dead, and to Ambassador (and apparently King) Ganeth for continuing to support the liberal arts (of assassination) by offering me sanctuary and patronage at Greeaere. And of course, all the GMs and our humble web mistress Kiera. Just wait 'til next year!

Sorry, Cralthar. You don't have a soul to give back. As soon as it was known you were plotting against the Empress, and actively DOING something against not only the Empress but pretty much everyone else in the castle, your protections under my Oath were forfeit. Blackwand had a good meal of Dragonlord Soul. If it helps any, you gave my sword a massive case of indigestion. ;)

Sadly, upon arriving home from the party, Lord Melkor discovered that his honor had been besmirched when Taltos revealed his massive gambling debts (how did Earl Grey solve his problem anyway?). Removed from the Dzur High Council, he was further annoyed to discover that other councilmembers found Foderil's Sunday conduct so honorable that they had decided to overlook his earlier actions. Empress Zerika decided to ignore these going-ons. That's gratitude for you. Next time, I think I'll just help push the cycle over. Anyway, see you at the party. Oh, Sorceress, can you mail me some rough directions? I live in "the kingdom" of Campbell.

Well, if it's any consolation, I believe the Seven will be holding a recruiting drive. If I've pieced events together properly, Nienor, Daymar, and Catodon were executed by the Empire. Cralthar was eaten by Blackwand (but on the bright side, won't have to worry about that 17,000 year curse), and K'Paar won an all-expense paid trip to the slopes of Dzur mountain where he'll get to fight an irritated Count Foderil. If he loses, well, the good news is that he won't have to worry about his soul being cursed. If he wins, I understand the Jhereg would like to deliver a pointed message... actually, if anyone who wants to tell me what their character is doing just after the game, I'll try to weave it all together into something coherent and include it with the postgame letter. No promises, it all depends on what everyone says and how much time I have.

Ah, gee, if I had known you would accept people like Sethra who didn't like what was going on, I would have joined you (My beliefs mirrors Sethra's). Then I could have joined the Seven, created absolute chaos, been captured, excuted, and cursed for 17,000 years . . . hmmm, I was probably better off as a dupe. But the Seven could have doubled their membership merely by recruiting everyone who hated Morralan, Aliria, and all those cowardly Jhereg-Teckla halfbreeds . . . .

Well, Here we go again. Set backs. Set backs. The seven will survive, if it takes 17,000 yrs. Fortunately, one of my original students, Fnord, and several others of the seven survived with items and widgets intact. If they don't manage to reorganize Dragaera to better effect this time around, Daymar, Sethra the Younger, and myself will have 17,000 yrs. in the halls of the Dead to discuss how th do it better next incarnation. Look out Dragaera, we'll be back! Also, Necromancer- I owe you one when I return and I think I can take you in a sorcerous duel, so watch it! Out of character - I loved the Game! Great fun being the godmother of a major conspiracy. Thank you Steve, Aimee, George, Barry, Mike (have I got everyone?) for great gamesmastering and thank you everyone who played for wonderful encounters! I've always wanted to be able to turn someone into a newt!

Jeez, you make me sound so... arbitrary. I didn't want to fight *everyone*; nary a slimy Jhereg felt my wrath, and only the Teckla who wasn't a Teckla got smacked around some... ;> And I didn't kill folks permanently or anything... hey, I also realized upon reading the rules again that I could've used some of that cash I was slinging about to keep all those, uh, *embarassing* stories out of the Rag... hindsight is 20/20. I guess you can tell what *my* goals and motivations were :> ...

First off...many thanx to the gamesmasters and gamesmoms for a FANTASTIC weekend! It has been quite a while since any LARP has challenged me in this manner, and I loved it! Now then...Alas Poor Rurik, yes, everyone you knew was in a conspiracy against you :P And, yes, your withdrawl from Warlord candidacy did help Lanier, but I maintain that it didn't help as much as me getting revealed to be one of the Seven. "And I woulda got away with it, too, if it wasn't fer you meddling kids!" For the record, we may have got caught, but not without all you little goodie-goodies having to work for it. ( I do so love it when people walk into my traps. )But enuff about that. I want to extend thanx and congrats to all involved, the weekend was all that I hoped for and more. And to the people who experienced SIL-West for the first time, nice work and welcome...consider yourselves addicted. As for the veterans, well, you all know how awesome you were, go ahead and brag...you earned it. Oh, and all you little goodie-goodies, I'll get you next time, and your little penguin, Toto, too. P.S. Why am I not in a single picture...not even in any of the group shots. I looked damn good! If anyone has any pics with me, please let me know.

S'Mirl was one of the original members of The Seven. Galen was a member of the Church of Chaos who got inducted into The Seven. Sorceress in Green fell in love with Lapsis who was the leader of the Seven. Sethra the Younger didn't like the way things were and joined The Seven. Lanier was just plain slime. Count Foderil wanted to fight just about everybody. Cheerful, huh?

Let me get this straight: S'mirl was a member of the seven Galen was a member of (or at least connected to) the seven Sethra the Younger and the Sorceress in Green joined the seven, and kept me on a run-around for the better part of Sunday. My "good friend" Lanier was the Jhereg's "man." Count Foderil wanted my blood. Was there any person in my character sheet who didn't try to fool/kill/otherwise mess me up?

I echo the sentiments of thanks to Steve, Aimee, George, Mike, Barry, Tom and all the Game Mothers. I can't wait till the next game. I have no ideas as to where to hold the game, but I for one wouldn't give a second thought to dropping a lot of money on these games. Do you know how much having K'Paar arrested TWICE messed me up? When K'Paar and Galen were arrested the first time (on Saturday night), I thought all of our plans were down the drain. As for Sunday morning, we used up so much creative energy trying to keep K'Paar from being mind probed and then rescuing him, my creativity was just about gone. Must say though, when Sunday rolled around everyone definitely pulled out all the stops. It was very fun and very draining at the same time. I haven't played a game this intense and fun in a long time.

Castle Black was a blast... Thanks to Steve & Aimee, George, Mike, Barry, Tom and the Game mothers too... And Thanks to all of the participants. I've gotta say this was the most fun I had (almost) without killing anyone. On the hit parade were Daymar (by executive order), Kiera (for lying to her boss)and K'parr...you don't know how close you were.. If K'parr hadn't walked upto me just as I had found out the Empress wanted him in custody, the body would still be in the far stairwell in the East wing. AS to these accusations about the Jhereg, we only wish to peacefully co-exist within the Empire... this was validated by the wisdom of Empress and Fentor's campaigning on our behalf.. I do not wish however to EVER be placed under the Orb again. My initial decision on the election of Warlord was to abstain from the get go. I personally didn't want the wrath of the Dragon Council directed at me, but I didn't expect our man Lanier to do so well.... Anybody got any hints where the Imperial guard escorted Mengroth aka F'Lopi to? The Jhereg council would like to... chat with him...... Until next time, check six.

Rurik, you asked if withdrawing as a Warlord candidate helped Lanier -- the answer is, "Yes, absolutely." Things worked out the way they did, in my opinion, because of how closely balanced the votes were among the candidates. With even one more candidate, I think the vote could have turned out _very_ differently. So have no fear on that count -- the withdrawl mattered.

Bwahahaha! Ruruk, if I followed your suggestion and attacked no-one weaker than myself, I wouldn't have had any fights whatsoever all weekend! Um, right, I'm not in character anymore. :P these games always do that to me... takes me weeks to stop being my character...

I, King Ganeth, wanted to let all know that I have a wonderful time at castle black this weekend. I am writing a book called "Seduction:Doing It Right". All those who have the pleasure and wish to contribute send a letter via courrier(since telepathy doesn't work on Greenaere). Anyway to all those I had the pleasure of meeting this weekend and those I did not THANKS FOR EVERYTHING. My first(and not my last) SilWest experience was AWESOME. I hope to see you all again soon and in future games. Keep in touch.

One of my evil twins seems to have filed a letter here under the name of Sethra the Younger. Be assured, I really had a fine time as usual, and will not rat on you all to Sethra Lavode. I second the thanks to Wendy for the work done here. This is outstanding!

To the Survivors in Castle Black . . . These words are written on the wall in the dungeon in the bowels of Castle Black, as I await my execution and damnation to 17,000 years of punishment. For some time I have been increasingly distressed with the current trends in the Dragaeran Empire, and in particular in the House of Dragon. While the Empire is being besieged by the forces of the East, the once-mighty and proud Dragonlords spend their time carousing, boozing, and scheming at an everlasting party in that den of iniquity and center of petty plots and gossip known as Castle Black. Nobody seems to mind that Dragonlord Morolan is more and more associating with assassins and thieves. Nobody seems to notice that pickpockets are so common that there is no place safe from them in all of Castle Black. Nobody seems to care that there are more Tekla and Djereg in the Castle than there are Dragaerans. It was a sign of this general laxness that I found Aliera's mighty Pathfinder laying about in a back hall, with nobody around to notice it. Nor in all the hours I carried it around did I once hear a whisper of concern about it being missed or being searched for. It seemed everybody was having too much fun plotting and dueling and politicking for position to even be concerned about such a missing item. Then, when Lord Morolan chose to abandon his own high-flown rule against the use of Morganti weapons, and leapt into battle defending his cousin and very dear friend with his own mighty weapon, he clearly showed that his flaunted "honor" was of secondary interest to his personal whims. So he plays fast and loose with his own rules and his own honor, while the rest of the Dragonlords go on with the party. Where then is the honor of the House of Dragon? In a bottle, it seems. In other words, the Empire is not only crumbling at the edges, it is rotting at the core. This was the last straw. I found myself not only infuriated, but in full realization that it is time that Castle Black falls. The Empire itself is in need of radical change. It was in this frame of mind that I was approached and invited to join The Seven in bringing this about. So of course I did. Whatever befalls me now - I go with my own honor intact. I shall remain a Dragon in my heart forever, even though I have repudiated the tarnished House of Dragon, because of the besotted and cowardly fools who bow to Morolan. Meanwhile - I have been psionically contacted by my namesake, Sethra Lavode, at Dzur Mountain. She had heard rumors and sensed the vibrations of some of the shameful activities in this foul place. I have verified them and relayed the details to her. The only thing I have left to say is . . . BEWARE THE WRATH OF SETHRA LAVODE. => Sethra the Younger <=

Wow! Glad you all had a good time. I think this is the first time we've gotten to see the feedback like this. Many thanks to Wendy/Kiera the Thief for all the work she's been doing on the website. And for all those who are worried... the next game will indeed have the requisite amount of puns.

Greetings, fellow lords, ladies, teckla and Easterners! I hope you take a few minutes to check out the photos that Kiera has so kindly posted. If you see yourself fairly prominently in an image but your character's name isn't in the filename, it's because I couldn't remember it. My sincere apologies to those this applies to, and I'd very much appreciate hearing from you so I can amend my own records. Hope to see you all on Saturday at SIG's party. Whoo whoo whoo whoo!!! The joke didn't come true about the jester ending up dead. Ta dah! But seriously, folks, whatta great shin-dig for the weekend. Much better than Vegas! Rob was *almost* apologetic at the end of the weekend for being such a dirty, no-good, underhanded, double-dealing, so-and-so... almost. But hat's off to him and the Sorceress in Green for pulling off the coup of the century! Thanks to Steve & Aimee for "typecasting" me as the jester. Kiera, if I recall correctly you stole Cuddles the cat from Aliera. I THINK she's the one who told me you took her. This first-timer is HOOKED. See you all around, and to those I befriended over the weekend: Too Bad for You! You're stuck with me now!!

Gentle Dragaerans & Easterners All, Had a Wonderful time! Aimee & Steve, thanks again for stretching my abilities. Playing both sides, or 3 sides or 7 against the middle, whereever that was, is very difficult. I havent had so much fun failing to make my goals. ... and to those I killed, double & triple crossed, turned into a newt, tortured or lied to (that's just about everybody) please forgive me, I'm not like that in real life. Hiyas all! Whoa, I was still having strange dreams of threatening dragonlords last night. Haven't had that happen since my very first time playing, when I had the vague idea that Nyarlathotep was out to get me still... ;> Anyway, glad to see a message board up, and hoping to see you all in the semi-near future, as I'll be escaping Boston for the bay area! Aww, I wanted to get a kittie . . . No, I didn't even know people had pets beyond any possible familiars out there (but you still have my sword :) To post my own question, did my withdrawal from Warlord actually help Lanier, or did everyone just become suspicious? Or did no one even notice unless I directly told them (Gosh, does anyone read the Rag?). Oh and by the way, you first-timers did great, esp. Kiera and Ambassador Ganeth (and probably several others, but those are the two I dealt to the most). Cynthia Barnes (Sorceress in Green) is the most incredible controller/plotter/manipulator I've ever seen. I'm still amazed she got out alive; a major tribute to her skill.. (I'm amazed I got out alive, for that matter). Where is everyone else, by the way? Question to the GM's: will the new game you're designing have the same level of puns as Op Atlantis? In a sick way, I sort of missed them.

DRAGON was awesome! I was astonished by its intricate rich weave. This is my first role-playing experience, and everyone I interacted with was wonderful. Hats off to Aimee and Steve, and all the GameMasters and GameMothers. I have one question: I thieved Cuddles the Cat from some hapless Dragaeran, and gave it to a certain Teckla friend who has cat allergies. (How very catty of me.) From whom did I steal Cuddles the Cat?
